How Much Rest in Between Sets to Build Muscle. Many people make the mistake of resting too short in between sets, making their bodybuilding workout into more of an aerobic activity. Although aerobics can play a role in increasing the body's ability to recover more quickly, short rest periods in between sets of an exercise can keep you from accessing the fast twitch muscle fibres because the ATP and nervous systems will not have adequate time to recover. If you wish to gain in strength or access the fast twitch fibres of a muscle, it is imperative for you to replenish the ATP energy source by allowing the phosphocreatine system to replenish it. This takes approximately 2-3 minutes to do so. Now if you wish to take this further, the nervous system can sometimes take EVEN longer to reset, meaning that if you lift too quickly, you may not be able to manifest the amount of electrical effort (coordination) to access the fast twitch fibres in full capacity, which is why some powerlifters will rest as long as 5 minutes in between sets. It's important to note that as a bodybuilder, you are trying to access all of the muscle fibres, so switching up the rest periods to access different muscle fibres can be an effective way to do so. Just know which part of your muscles your hitting when you do so.
