The Oblique portion of the vastus medialis referred to as the VMO muscle in your quads works intrinsically with your glutes to stabilize your knees.
Having weak VMO increases the potential for your knees to wobble from side to side, which can become a big problem if you like to run, jump or squat heavy loads.
In our experience, this is one of the leading causes of knee pain, commonly called patellofemoral pain or discomfort by physiotherapists.
Often the root cause has very little to do with your actual knee, but will end up causing quite severe problems for the knee.
So the best (gold standard) way to fix the problem is to strengthen the VMO and glutes.
There's a myriad of great VMO and gluteal strengthening exercises we use in the Foundation Movement System to prepare the knee before a painful injury sets in.
In this video Kaliesha and Yani demonstrate the second in progression for the VMO isolation exercises. Obviously the VMO or quads are not the only muscle working, but that's what we'd like.
In this short video Yani explains how to do the second progression VMO Front Step Up and help to isolate the VMO to strengthen and stabilise the knee.
This is a great exercise to help overcome or fix knee pain commonly associated with runner.
