The air squat is one of the best bilateral (both legs working) beginner leg and core exercises and best of all it can be done anywhere, with absolutely no gym equipment.
Air refers to the fact that you're not lifting any external weight. There's some misunderstanding in the fitness world and often an air squat is referred to as a bodyweight squat. However, I suggest you proceed with caution entering a gym and telling people you can perform a bodyweight squat.
